After a last-ball win against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday, Mumbai Indians will look to continue the winning momentum against controversy-hit Kings XI Punjab in the ninth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, on Saturday. While Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians registered their first win of the season due to an umpire’s game-changing error on the final ball, KXIP rode on Ravichandran Ashwin’s act of ‘mankading’ to secure a victory over Rajasthan Royals. A controversy-laden first two games at their back, Kings XI Punjab will look to exploit familiar conditions in the KXIP vs MI match.
Mumbai Indians 62/2 (6.2 Ovs)
Murugan Ashwin 0.2-0-0-1
Kings XI Punjab will host the Mumbai Indians at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. Both the teams have played two matches in the Indian Premier League so far and have put in an inconsistent performance. Kings XI Punjab won a controversy-laden match against Rajasthan Royals in their IPL opener but then lost to Kolkata Knight Riders by 28 runs to see their momentum come to a halt. On the other hand, MI lost their first encounter comprehensively to Delhi Capitals but put in a much better performance against RCB to notch up their first win of the season.
The match is likely to see some changes in the teams as both MI and KXIP are still in the process of striking the right balance in terms of team selection. Captain R Ashwin made a crucial error against KKR as KXIP had only three fielders inside the circle instead of four when Andre Russell was cleaned up by Mohammed Shami. Russell then went on to score 48 runs off 17 balls. The home side will now look to avoid these basic mistakes against the three-time champions.
MI also had some sort of controversy against RCB as Lasith Malinga’s no-ball on the last delivery was not spotted by umpires. Before the teams head out, let’s have a look at all the statistics between the teams-
1. Both the teams have played each other 22 times in the Indian Premier League. Mumbai have managed to triumph over the Kings 12 times while the home side has notched up 10 victories.
2. At the PCA Stadium in Mohali, Mumbai Indians have picked three wins while the Kings XI Punjab have won four times. Last year, Kings XI Punjab lost twice to Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Mumbai won the first game by 6 wickets in Indore, while edging KXIP by just 3 runs at the Wankhede.
3. The most number of runs in this fixture has been scored by Shaun Marsh. He has hit 526 runs for KXIP against MI. But he will not take part in the match as he went unsold in the auctions. Surprisingly for MI, Kieron Pollard is their highest scorer against Punjab as he has notched 327 runs.
4. The honour of taking the most number of wickets in this match-up goes to Sri Lankan speedster Lasith Malinga. He has taken 22 wickets for Mumbai against KXIP.
